Optical Lens Types

When you work in optics, you know the smallest detail can change everything. A slight variation in coating or curvature can decide whether a patient walks away impressed or disappointed.

At TOG Europe, we supply optical laboratories and optometrists with certified ophthalmic lenses manufactured by Thai Optical Group (TOG), a producer with more than seventy years of experience.

Our goal is to give you dependable quality, transparent information, and a strong European supply chain.

This article looks at lens types, materials, and technologies from the perspective of professionals who already know the fundamentals.

One manufacturer. Every lens type. Delivered worldwide.

Understanding Optical Lens Categories

Every lens begins with three factors: design, material, and coating. Understanding how these interact is key to predictable optical performance.

All TOG lenses are produced in controlled facilities accredited under ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

Each carries CE marking confirming compliance with EN ISO 8980 optical performance standards.

That level of certification is not just paperwork. It means your Rx jobs meet European requirements and your patients receive consistent clarity and durability.

The same standards apply across our full catalogue, whether you are ordering single vision stock or custom free-form progressives.

Core Lens Designs

With more than seventy years of experience in semifinished and finished lens manufacturing, state-of-the-art free-form surfacing labs, and long-standing R&D partnerships, we transform optical-grade materials into advanced prescription lenses for global markets.

Progressive Lenses – Good, Better, Best from One Source

Our progressive portfolio is developed in collaboration with R&D partners licensing established patents for position-of-wear optimisation, aberration control and binocular balance.

Using our semifinished blanks, we offer three clear performance tiers: a dependable entry design (Good), the same platform enhanced for improved peripheral clarity (Better), and a premium configuration integrating the full patent suite for wider fields of view and smoother visual transitions (Best).

Advanced digital free-form surfacing across all tiers is engineered to support fast and comfortable wearer adaptation.

Manufacturing and Quality Control

Myopia-Control Lenses

In cooperation with R&D partners licensing Brien Holden Vision Institute–related intellectual property, we manufacture myopia-control lens designs intended to support the management of myopia progression in children.

These lenses are processed like standard single-vision blanks in the laboratory, while incorporating design principles aligned with evidence-based myopia-management strategies used by eye-care professionals worldwide.

Single-Vision Lenses

Our single-vision lenses are produced using free-form manufacturing on our semifinished blanks to widen clear viewing zones, reduce edge thickness and minimise peripheral distortion-delivering enhanced comfort and visual quality even in straightforward prescriptions.

Activity-Specific Designs

Our special-use lens range includes office lenses with expanded intermediate zones, high-wrap sport single-vision designs, and driving lenses optimised for distance clarity and dashboard viewing. Each design is carefully tuned to meet the visual demands of its intended application.

OEM Partnerships

On request, selected lens platforms can be converted into white-label solutions, enabling optical businesses to launch their own branded lens lines—supported by our manufacturing capacity, technical expertise and global logistics network.

One manufacturer. A complete lens portfolio. Delivered worldwide.

Material-Based Lens Types

Polycarbonate Lenses

Lightweight and impact-resistant, polycarbonate lenses are suited for children’s eyewear, safety frames, and rimless mounts.

TOG moulds polycarbonate lenses under controlled temperature and pressure to achieve uniform molecular density.

Each batch undergoes impact resistance and refractive index testing before leaving the production line.

For European labs, this means easy edging, minimal warping, and reduced spoilage rates during coating.

Trivex Lenses

Trivex® combines strength with excellent optical transmission. Originally designed for aerospace use, it has become one of the preferred materials for rimless and drill-mounted frames.

At TOG, Trivex® lenses are processed through low-stress curing systems that maintain surface stability.

They are light, optically sharp, and mechanically reliable - ideal for precision jobs that need both aesthetics and durability.

High Index Lenses

When prescriptions demand thin lenses without distortion, high index materials are essential.

We manufacture options ranging from 1.60 to 1.74, each optimised for slimness, clarity, and comfort.

Before shipment, every high-index lens passes internal optical distortion and colour-neutrality checks.

These lenses are popular among customers who value minimal weight and a refined appearance, particularly in premium progressives.

LeafECO Bio Based Lenses

LeafECO® represents TOG’s leadership in sustainable lens materials.

Made from 82 percent bio-based polymer derived from renewable resources, these lenses deliver identical optical quality to traditional resins with a lower environmental impact.

Independent assessments show up to 35 percent reduction in carbon emissions during production.

LeafECO® lenses fit seamlessly into existing Rx workflows, so labs can adopt sustainability without retooling.

Special Lens Technologies and Coatings

Special Lens Technologies and Coatings

Transitions ® Lenses

Through our partnership with Transitions ®  Optical Ltd, TOG manufactures photochromic lenses that adapt quickly to changing light.

Each batch is tested for activation and fade-back speed under varying temperature and UV exposure levels.

These lenses provide wearers with visual comfort while maintaining UV protection.

For labs, integration is straightforward because all Transitions® lenses are supplied with certification data and performance charts.

Bluloc Technology

Digital life increases exposure to high-energy visible light.

Bluloc™ lenses filter this spectrum effectively while preserving true colour perception. They combine UV and blue-light filtration, reducing visual fatigue for screen users.

Bluloc™ lenses also sit neatly in a  tier of our pricing structure, giving practices a reliable upgrade path for digitally active clients.

Anti-Reflective and Scratch-Resistant Coatings

A well-made coating system extends lens life and improves visual clarity.

TOG’s coatings are applied using multi-layer vacuum deposition and hydrophobic surface treatments.

Each process is benchmarked against EN ISO standards for abrasion resistance and adhesion.

Our coating engineers continually monitor reflectance spectra and surface tension to maintain uniform results across every batch.

Manufacturing and Quality Control

Thai Optical Group operates one of the largest integrated lens manufacturing sites in Asia, combining polymerisation, free-form surfacing, coating, and finishing under one roof. Every stage is recorded digitally for traceability.

TOG Europe manages distribution and quality assurance for our European partners. When an order is placed, lens data is matched to serialised production batches, so you can trace each job from resin lot to finished product.

Our production follows documented procedures under ISO 9001 for quality and ISO 14001 for environmental management. Audits are performed regularly, and partners can request compliance documentation at any time.

The result is confidence: you know exactly where your lenses come from and how they were made.

Pricing and Supply Flexibility

Managing stock and margins is easier when pricing is predictable.
Our Good Better Best framework categorises lenses by performance and material grade.

  • Good covers standard single vision or bifocal lenses.
  • Better includes polycarbonate, blue-control, or Trivex® options.
  • Best offers high index, Transitions®, and advanced progressive designs.

This model simplifies communication with patients and keeps your team aligned on recommendations.

TOG Europe supports the system with published price lists, coating compatibility charts, and lead-time schedules available through the Eye Pro Hub.

European warehousing ensures shorter delivery windows and reduced shipping costs.

Sustainable Manufacturing and Lens Innovation

Environmental responsibility is part of how TOG works. Our Thai facilities use solar panels covering more than twenty thousand square metres of roof area.
Closed-loop water treatment systems recycle up to 90 per cent of process water, and waste resin is repurposed rather than discarded.

The Zero Waste to Landfill programme turns lens by-products into construction materials for local schools. All claims are independently verified under ISO 14001 environmental audits.

For partners, this means every LeafECO® or standard lens you buy supports measurable sustainability, not marketing language. It also gives your practice a credible ESG talking point for environmentally conscious clients.
